Canada passport photo: size and requirements
Canada uses one of the largest passport photo sizes: 50 × 70 mm, with the face (chin to crown) between 31 and 36 mm. For paper applications, a commercial photographer must stamp or write their name, address and the date on the back of one photo, so home prints are usually not accepted for mailed applications.

Things people get wrong
- Background plain white or light-coloured, evenly lit.
- Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open.
- Visa and permanent-resident photos for IRCC have their own rules (often 35 × 45 mm) — this page covers the Canadian passport.
- Check the current rules for online renewal uploads on canada.ca.
Make one from a photo you take at home
- Stand about 1–1.5 m from a plain wall, facing a window so light falls evenly on your face.
- Have someone else take the photo at eye level (selfies distort the face and are often rejected).
- Upload it to the StageZap studio, choose the ID photo tab, this size and background.
- Check the result against the table above, then print at 300 dpi or upload the digital file.
StageZap retouches your own photo (background, framing, lighting). It does not change your face, and we cannot guarantee acceptance by any government or embassy.
