A clean white background is the default for marketplace main images and many web stores. It looks simple, but “white” in a photo is rarely white: most phone shots end up light grey, slightly blue or uneven at the corners. Marketplaces like Amazon ask for pure white — RGB 255, 255, 255 — for the main image. This guide covers how to shoot for it, how to fix it, and how to check you got there.
Why “almost white” is a problem
On a white web page, a background of 245, 245, 245 shows as a visible grey box around your product. It looks unprofessional and on some marketplaces can trigger a main-image warning. Uneven backgrounds — bright in the middle, grey at the corners — are even more obvious in search grids. See our Amazon main image requirements for the specifics.
Option 1: Shoot it white
- Use a seamless sweep — a sheet of white card curved from the table up the wall, so there is no horizon line.
- Light the background more than the product. The background needs to be overexposed to reach pure white while the product is exposed correctly. Two lamps on the background and one soft light on the product is the classic setup.
- Keep the product away from the sweep (30 cm or more) to reduce color spill and shadows.
- Set white balance manually or shoot in daylight so the white is neutral, not blue or yellow.
This gives the best edges but requires space and lights.
Option 2: Fix it in editing
Traditional editing means cutting out the product with a pen tool or selection, placing it on a pure-white layer and adding a soft shadow so it does not float. It is precise but slow — fine for five products, painful for five hundred. Hair, fur, transparent glass and fine edges take the most time.
Option 3: Use an AI white-background tool
AI tools like StageZap white background product photos take a phone photo shot on any surface and return the product on clean white with a natural contact shadow. The important part is fidelity: the product’s shape, color, logo and label text must stay exactly the same. Zoom in on small print before publishing — that is where any tool is most likely to slip.
How to check the background is truly white
- Open the image in any editor with a color picker.
- Sample the four corners and a point near the product. Each should read 255, 255, 255.
- Place the image on a pure-white web page or document. If you can see the edge of the image, it is not pure white.
Shadows: keep a little
A product with no shadow at all looks cut out and floating. A soft contact shadow directly beneath the product keeps it grounded while the rest of the background stays pure white. Avoid long, hard shadows that spread across the frame.
Framing for marketplaces
- Fill most of the frame with the product (Amazon recommends the product fills about 85% of the image).
- Use a square canvas for most marketplaces, at least 1000 px on the long side so zoom works.
- No props, text, badges or watermarks on the main image.
